Gallery 2

March 28 - May 20, 2014

This exhibition comprises old and very old drawings from Mongolia. Some are fragments, others are single leaves from sutras; they include meticulous manuscripts and casual sketches. Most are related to Tantric Buddhism, but there are also astrological charts, sheets of musical notation, a small portrait, some animal drawings, and a picture of a temple. Exoticism is part of their charm, but that doesn't fully account for their appeal. These ephemeral drawings might normally have disappeared without trace, and for that very reason - the fact that they have survived - they are curiously evocative of distant thoughts and feelings.
