The Paradise [23]
Bob Quinn
10 December - 16 February 2006
In this series of exhibitions, artists make a selection of work that reflects their idea of 'The Paradise'.
Paradise: [1] an enclosed garden [2] the garden of Eden [3] a place of bliss, felicity, or delight [4] heaven
'The Atlantean'
This country has traditionally been regarded as a poor and isolated Celtic island on the periphery of Europe, but Bob Quinn has proposed that ancient Ireland was actually at the hub of an ancient network of seafaring routes, and that the nation's early identity was formed by its constant contact with the peoples of other countries that border the Atlantic-especially those of France, Spain, and North Africa.
These extraordinary films, made by Quinn over twenty years ago, focus on the similarities between the cultures of Ireland and North Africa. Today, in an Ireland that is prosperous, self-confident, and blandly Eurocentric, their message is even more necessary and resonant.
The four films have been compiled onto a single DVD which is on sale from the Gallery.
