Drawings from India

21 August - 30 September 2009

This collection of informal and anonymous Indian drawings comprises yantras, spiritual diagrams, sketches of mythological birds and figures, and astrological charts. They were made in the first half of the 20th century.

There are two remarkable aspects to these drawings. First, they have a vital immediacy that is related to their main purpose - the practical illustration of spiritual themes or journeys of inner transformation. Second, they are devoid of self-consciousness. In that and other respects they are not 'artworks', although in many other ways they could pass as such.

Some of these sketches are little more than jottings or scribbles; others have peculiar intensity. Taken out of context, as they are here, they become strange things that are possessed of mystery. This is doubtless far from their original intention, but their impact and interest are certainly not dependent on exoticism.
