Film Screenings

Requiem for a Village
Dir. David Gladwell; UK; 1975; 68 minutes

As modern machinery and housing estates encroach on the traditional English countryside, figures from a rural past are resurrected through the memories of an old man who tends the graveyard in a country church. A curious and unusual film, with a mood reminiscent of the work of the painter Stanley Spencer.

Thursday, February 16, at 5pm

Robinson in Ruins
Dir. Patrick Keiller; UK; 2010; Colour; 101 minutes

The third in the series of Keiller’s ‘Robinson’ films tells the story of the attempts of a fictional maverick scholar to address ideas and thoughts about current social and economic issues through film. As he journeys through locations of natural, historical, and geographical significance, Robinson muses on capitalist catastrophes and the English landscape. Like its predecessors, this is a highly articulate and off-beat cinematic essay.

Thursday, February 23, at 5pm

Here’s a Health to the Barley Mow: A Century of Folk Customs and Ancient Rural Games
UK; 1912 - 2005; Colour/B+W; 365 minutes

Old and new documentaries, long forgotten television reports and rare silent films are collated in this extensive and engaging overview of historical and contemporary folk practices and rituals in Britain. These odd and engaging customs include sword dances, tar-barrel rolling, mummers’ plays, and many other enduring traditions.

Because of the length of this film, it will be screened over two weeks. Please note earlier starting time:

Part 1 (171 mins): Thursday, March 1, at 4pm.
(Includes 'Dance and Song' and 'Extreme Sports')
Part 2 (205 mins): Thursday, March 8, at 4pm.
(Includes 'Mummers and Hobbyhorses' and 'All Manner of Customs')

All are welcome, admission free.
