Damnation, set in a bleak industrial landscape soaked with constant rain and shrouded in fog, explores the isolation of its central character, Karrer.
His pursuit of a married nightclub singer leads him into moral bankruptcy and ultimately serves only to further compound his isolation. Developed from a short story by the Hungarian novelist László Krasznahorkai, the film marks a watershed in Tarr's stylistic development, using extremely slow camera movements to create a languid, almost hypnotic, effect.
